Eriska opens for its 40th Year
As always the break in Januruay is too short for most of the team here and too long for our bank manager! In reality whilst the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and it must have been great for my parents to close the doors and lock the gate on the bridge - for 5 months each year - in reality we could neither survive today nor have invested so heavily in all the facilities without having extended our period of opening.
There must have been more than a mad hatted idea to my parents buying Eriska back in 1973 and there must have been a little bit of romance in the concept that they were growing their own produce in the garden , farming their own livestock and then cooking it all in a simple way in the kitchen. Indeed whilst we still have a number of guests staying with us who first visited Eriska back in the early days we will keep a handle on the past.
Whilst times have changed and we no longer have the dairy herd or vast kitchen gardens we probably would have been stopped by EU regulations or Health and Safety long ago. But some things do not change, the hall fire still burns at the heart of the house, the daily saga of boilers and water supply remain constant and the search for new better produce and service continues unabated.
Anyway today marks another era, the start of 2013 for real, whilst many others set New Years resolutions and broke them we have an extra 4 weeks to set ours and today they come into operation. In a strange way they vary little from year to year and at their core remains the ethos which my father passed down many years ago of insuring we leave Eriska better tonight than we found it today. It kept them going and well for 40 years so we can hope that it will keep us going for the next 40!
So tonight we will be back up and running, budgets set back to zero and hopes and aspirations for the next 12 months ahead seem high. The rain has stopped the wind is calm so maybe it is all boding well for 2013- lets hope so!
