My father was once asked what we farmed her at Eriska having proudly stated his credentials as a farmer. Indeed we had once had a thriving business here at eriska witha dairy herd and a highland herd but laws and regulations have curtailed all these activities but he still proudly boasted of his agricultural skills. however as this enquiry progressed he eventually had to come clean and admit that his most successful crop was not tangible plants in the ground or meat on the plate but EU subsidies. So it was not really surprising when we were asked again this week if we could justify our agricultural number and need for assistance in terms of actual production and consideration is once again being given to our summer herd and pastures new.
Along with this ,this week my mother handed me an envelope containing a dusty document. It transpired that a lawyer in Oban was clearing out his office and came across a file in relation to my late grandmother and amongst the papers were these share documents for the Eriska Herd Company. This was a concept dreamt up by may father to teach allegedly Chay and I about ownership and clearly he had asked my Grandmother to look after the documents either because she had a safety deposit box- which obviously given the time taken to discover the documents was not all that safe, or to save him from hawking the shares in times of temptation. However now they are simply worth the memories although that its good enough, and maybe we now should reinvent the company to help rekindle the subsidies!!
