With last week’s #weatherbomb affecting many of us here in Scotland and the U.K., we couldn’t think of anywhere better to curl up in front of this winter in the cosy surroundings of Eriska. 

Here are just some of our recommendations on how to make the most of cosying up indoors this winter:

…my true love gave to me, three hotel dogs – Dibley, Blue and Sula.

 

Dibley the dog has long been a part of Eriska and even contributes online occasionally in his own blog. Take a read over here!

Blue on the other hand, a ‘new character on the block’ so to speak, is a little bit younger than Dibley and hecertainly is a character. One to look out for when walking around the grounds of Eriska – friendly character of course! 

Dibley_the_dog_and_Blue_tea_party_at_the_Isle_of_Eriska,_ScotlandSula has been around for a while as well, better known as Mrs B’s dog, is sometimes spotted after afternoon tea parties with Dibley – she even dresses for the occasion!

Here at Eriska, we understand that its not just owners who want to escape from it all on holiday. 'Tis the Season to be Jolly...

We think that all our guests and our blog readers will agree, 2014 has certainly flown by and now, on the 13th December with the Hotel closed until 19th December, and with just 12 days until Christmas and 19 days until the New Year, we thought we’d take a look back at our journey this year…

As normal, Eriska remained closed throughout January 2014 to give our team a much-needed break whilst giving us time to work on various elements of the hotel and island in anticipation for another year ahead. 

We re-opened in February to a fully booked Valentine’s February weekend and a great start to the year. We then went onto hold our bi-annual wine weekend in March and meanwhile we used the next couple of months to work on finalising our 40th birthday celebrations plans and launch a brand new concept...

Eriska_Hilltop_Reserves_Hot_TubEriska’s Hilltop Reserves were launched in July 2014, and we also gave away the opportunity to host your own private celebration on your own island for 2 nights to celebrate the Eriska Hotel reaching the grand age of 40 years since it first opened its doors to the public – one lucky winner was picked!

As always, our time over the summer months was spent ensuring all our guests fully enjoyed their Eriska experience and we were thrilled in September 2014 to be accredited with our first ever Michelin star – huge well done to Head Chef Ross and his team for all their effort and great achievement. 

Now our attention turns to our pre-Christmas, Christmas and New Year guests to ensure that they celebrate in Santa_in_Hot_Tub_(185x123)style and we hope this year’s Festive celebrations will be even better than previous as we clock up another celebration during our 40th year, before a well earned rest for our staff, and our Spa developments…

Oban Winter Festival 2014

It appears that the Christmas spirit has arrived already in Oban as the annual Oban Winter Festival began on Friday 21st November and continues for 10 days celebating not only Christmas but many of the great assets we're fortunate to have readily available on our doorstep here on the west coast of Scotland including Oban whisky (Haven't tried it? Ask our serving staff the next time you visit Eriska's Library Bar), the wealth of history we are surrounded by and great quality, local produce. 

oban_winter_festival_fireworks-1As well as a celebration for local people, the Oban Winter Festival goes to show that even though its winter, there's still a reason to visit the west coast of Scotland. 

Over the weekend, the town centre of Oban came alive with something for all the family to enjoy including the annual reindeer parade, food markets and interactive events, and of course the switching on of Oban's Christmas lights in Station Square. 

Throughout this week, the winter festival celebrations continue, culminating in St Andrews Day celebrations - an event that will be celebrated not only in Oban, but across the whole of Scotland and around the world.

Meanwhile here at Eriska, although no official St Andrews Day celebrations planned, we're sure some of ourguests will celebrate with a small dram, as we get ready to close the hotel for a few days before the festivities get into full swing as we welcome our Christmas and New Year guests to Eriska.

In case you hadn’t noticed: Christmas is coming!

There isn’t a surer sign of the looming winter than having the festivities of the season stuffed down your throat. With streets and shopping centers lined top-to-bottom with lights and decorations, Christmas jumpers out of retirement and the occasional Christmas song starting to make an appearance on many a sound system, it’s only a matter of time before we’re dropped into below freezing temperatures and left to rely on this Christmas cheer to see us through the worst of it. Bah humbug!

The upcoming week, though still largely mild, will show a noticeable temperature drop compared to previous weeks with daily highs dropping into single digits for frequently.

Today: Due to remain dry though largely cloudy.

Monday: Another dry day ahead, with some intervals of sunshine in the early afternoon

Tuesday: Light rainfall to begin the day, getting progressively heavier in the afternoon. Though predicted to clear up in the evening.

Wednesday: More rain showers to dominate the day, with some burst of sunshine in the afternoon and moderate gusts from the east.

Thursday: Sporadic showers and bursts of sunshine scattered throughout the day.

Friday: Things seem to remain largely the same, with rain and some intermittent sunny spells.

Saturday: The week ends with little change as the forecast predicts more rainfall.

So it seem that the mild season prevails for another week, easing our minds after scottish weather forecasts warned of Arctic blasts this month! So make sure to wrap up warm and enjoy it while you can - who knows what to expect in coming weeks!

The final month of Autumn is upon us. It's that dreaded time of year where the beautiful warm colours of the dying flora lie in soggy heaps on the ground, leaving morbidly jagged trees in their wake; where the temperature just gets a little too cold and most of us go through most of our day seeing little, if any, sunlight.

But things could be worse. Following the "warmest Halloween on record" temperatures around the country are due to plumet quickly - brought on from cold blast in the arctic region which is predicted to leave us with the coldest winter in a century! So take whatever sunshine and above freezing temperatures you can get, cause it certainly doesn't seem like it will last!

Today: Following a dry morning, rain is expected to breakout mid-afternoon getting heavier as the evening progresses.

Monday: Another dry and sunny morning ahead, with some light rain in the afternoon. The evening due to take a bit of a foggy turn.

Tuesday: Looks to remain dry throughout, with sporadic intervals of sunshine in the afternoon.

Wednesday: Predicted to be a clear day, with plenty of sunshine. Though temperatures due to be as low as 2°C

Thursday: Light rain showers look to dominate the majority of the day, accompanied by some moderate winds.

Friday: Expected to be another rainy day, starting off heavy and getting progressively lighter by night.

Saturday: The week looks to end on a bit of a wet one, with light rain throughout. Though some patches of sunshine are likely to make an appearance periodically through the day.

Though not ideal, the week ahead seems to be quite mild in comparison to previous weeks. Though if you haven't already, it's definitely time to break out the hats, scarves and gloves with near-freezing temperatures on the cards!

Why do we Carve Pumpkins?

Isle_of_Eriska-1This week the team at Eriska decided to get festive and hold a friendly pumpkin-carving contest  - much to the delight of our guests who enjoy them as they pass the entrance of the hotel.

Though Halloween is over for another year, the practice of carving jack-o-lanterns was initially done on the 1st of November (many many years ago of course!). The tradition originated in Ireland, when they would place candles in hollowed out turnips to ward off spirits during Samhain (pronounced sah-win) - which is an ancient Celtic festival, celebrated on 1st November, from which many parts of Halloween is derived.

Samhain marks the end of harvesting season and beginning of winter and on this day the ancient Celts believed that spirits could walk the earth, often resulting in the use of masks as not to be recognised as human.
